In her personal and professional life, Sarah has worked hard and placed a high emphasis on listening to others. Telling others what to do without listening to input is not leadership: it is faulty and inferior public service. Sarah understands that if she is elected to the District 90 school board, she is responsible for not only the students of District 90, but also the whole District 90 community. The principles below are what will guide Sarah’s decisions, but she is eager to hear from the community on what you want to see in our schools. Sarah filled out the Activist Toolkit for the upcoming election. The Activist Toolkit is a guide put together by local community leaders for elections in Oak Park, River Forest, and Berwyn, as well as other neighboring communities. The Toolkit is meant to inform voters of the different candidates and their positions on issues. To view Sarah's responses, click here. To view the responses for other River Forest races, click here.

EmpathyIt is important to keep empathy in mind as we think about pedagogical goals and standards, and as we formulate best practices for teaching today’s students. Empathy needs to extend to the teachers: they are the heart and soul of the schools, and it is important to involve them in conversations about their school and students. District 90 has a reputation of excellent education, and we need to value the people who keep that education great from year to year. Empathy also needs to extend to our students: as we think about what’s best for them, let’s think about them as people, in a holistic way, and not just as units in the calculation of metrics or test scores.

EquityRiver Forest is a diverse and wonderful community, and it is essential to remember that there are different needs across this community. Equity needs to be considered when District 90 revisits current policies and when District 90 adopts new policies. In the past there have been suggested referenda to rid District 90 of striving for equity and building and improving an equity plan. A healthy, progressive community must consider equity as a pillar of the foundation to the school system, and it should be a goal we strive for in everything we do.

Educational ExcellenceDistrict 90 is known as a leader in providing excellent education, and the school board is tasked with making sure that this history is built upon, and adapted for modern times. It is important to strive for excellence, but also to have conversations about what this really means. Excellence is not just a score on a state report card: it is serving the wide varied needs of the whole community. Part of District 90’s strategic plan is providing evidence based instruction. We have and can retain a diverse and experienced staff, together with recruiting the best talent. We need to ensure our district has a reputation for putting our educators first and listening to their needs and ideas, and utilizing them as our greatest asset.
